Umeed: Colours of Hope
The Bhavan, 4a Castletown Road, West Kensington, London, W14 9HE
“Umeed” is the Hindi word for “Hope”. Sunena Gupta brings to you a contemporary concept produced in the classical dance form, Kathak. She tells the story of a young girl navigating her way through struggles with mental health, chronic illness and self-image issues. She compares happiness, anger, fear, sadness, love and hope to different shades and colours. The 1-hour show entails traditional Kathak and included pure ragas, poems, Sufism and fusion music. With this production, Sunena hopes to urge those who have lived this journey to hold out a hand, and those who are struggling to take one.
Sunena, a senior disciple of Guru Mulla Afsar Khan, was trained at the Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society. She completed her Manch Pravesh in 2016 and received the ‘Natya Visharad’ title award. She performs extensively in Singapore and California.
